But my feeling is th...I have never thought on that. But my feeling is that the only reason for Crozier to do what you say would be that they had already taken the decision of splitting in two groups when they landed in the island. Thing which apparently didn´t happen till later (if it happened at all), otherwise they would have say so in the note left in the cairn. However, in the case they had taken different ways after, I can´t imagine Crozier coming back days or weeks later to Victory point and crawling to unbury the cairn for adding that to the message. But stranger things have happened...

About Matty island, you can read about them in Woodman´s book. McClintock passed by the island when searching for Franklin. He found several snow huts and lots of pieces of wood.
It is not clear from where this wood came. It seems that Burwash was said by the Inuits that a pile of boxes had been abandoned long time ago there. Burwash indicated in his map there were some relics in an islet south of Matty island but he didn´t explain the nature of them.

About the boat, it makes sense what Woodman suggest. That if, during the summer of 1846 the ships tried to pass through Matty island towards the inexistent Poctes Bay, they could have downloaded part of the supplies to avoid being grounded in shallow waters. They could have lost easily a boat then due to the weight of the heavy load.

It exists also the possibility that during the spring or summer of 1847 they had gone east trying to locate the North Magnetic Pole again. A friend of mine thinks it is quite improbable because they were trained Navy men which followed strictly orders, what would be the point on rediscovering the Magnetic Pole?

But on the other hand they were very close to it, so close that they even could have realised its position had moved north from the point where James Clark Ross had located it. That would be then the discovery of the fact that the North Pole wasn´t a still point but that it was in movement. My thinking is that there is also a chance that the sunken boat of Matty island could have capsized while going or returning from the west coast of Boothia peninsula. Inuit stories tell Franklin tried to go this way first but found Ross Strait too shallow to continue. Allegedly, he also lost a boat there.

Greetings
P51Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8455284570156061492.post-88719291917250138682016-09-14T08:56:09.468+02:002016-09-14T08:56:09.468+02:00Anyway this deserves a serious attempt, and not th...Anyway this deserves a serious attempt, and not this cursory analisys, to reconstruct some of the facts. Once you have a story over the table it is easier to make variations about it. Many people have thought what could have happened, what I am asking to the experts (and that was the purpose of my post, excite their imagination) is to do a complete version of what happened including number of boats, number of parties, dates, people of each party, distances, likely routes, and so on. Over a first draft, we could discard or add new theories making different scenarios. I will do it but it can take me one thousand years...Andrés Paredeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17283802897907742244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8455284570156061492.post-62073415311283174362016-09-14T08:51:18.094+02:002016-09-14T08:51:18.094+02:00I built my theory based on what I had read at the ...I built my theory based on what I had read at the moment which suggested that the ship had been re-manned and sailed south, but maybe there is new information which contradicts that first opinions.
I read it here:

http://www.canadiangeographic.ca/article/sir-john-franklins-hms-terror-believed-found-arctic

"“The well-preserved wreck matches the Terror in several key aspects,” the Guardian states, “but it lies 60 miles (96km) south of where experts have long believed the ship was crushed by ice, and the discovery may force historians to rewrite a chapter in the history of exploration.” The Guardian noted that “A long, heavy rope line running through a hole in the ship’s deck suggests an anchor line may have been deployed before the Terror went down. If true, that sets up the tantalising possibility that British sailors re-manned the vessel after she was abandoned at the top of Victoria Strait in a desperate attempt to escape south.”Andrés Paredeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17283802897907742244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8455284570156061492.post-7879269451655352742016-09-13T17:55:31.919+02:002016-09-13T17:55:31.919+02:00Does the fact that no note has been found near Ter...Does the fact that no note has been found near Terror Bay, despite numerous searches indicate that the ship drifted there, unmanned? The anchor cable that was deployed could have been to fix an ice anchor, which was left when the ship was abandoned near Cape Felix.
Randall Osczevskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09858473343619938440noreply@blogger.com
