There is a facebook group called Remembering Frankin expeditio where you could find some extra help https://www.facebook.com/groups/11434844549, in that group there are people from Nunavut who could help us to find the actual place of Henry´s grave. There are also many descendants from the Franklin expedition members who are trying, same as you to find more information about their ascentors. Sorry for the late reply...Andrés Paredeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17283802897907742244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8455284570156061492.post-73625352963958220902020-07-29T18:46:57.818+02:002020-07-29T18:46:57.818+02:00Andres: I am indeed related to Henry Mathias. I have only recently found out that Henry was on the HMS Enterprise and died on board. He is the brother of my great great grandfather, William Bowen Mathias, also a surgeon. I was amazed at your commentary on Henry and was given the link to you page from Richard Potter.trinity genealogyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00636387893582347336noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8455284570156061492.post-25894045119983388952015-08-22T19:03:23.944+02:002015-08-22T19:03:23.944+02:00Este comentario ha sido eliminado por el autor. Andrés Paredeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17283802897907742244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8455284570156061492.post-62864582617063454072015-08-22T19:03:13.618+02:002015-08-22T19:03:13.618+02:00Thanks for your words Randall. If I find any further clue about him I will let you know but as you could have deduced from the reading of Glenn's comment on this and other posts, he is the person who, for me understanding, has the vastest knowledge about the lives of those sailors. He will surely could provide you with more details.Andrés Paredeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17283802897907742244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8455284570156061492.post-66016987848108113892015-08-21T17:37:22.419+02:002015-08-21T17:37:22.419+02:00Great post Andres, and a wonderful informative por...Great post Andres, and a wonderful informative portrait of a forgotten place and the men who lived and died there. It is not inconceivable that Henry Mathias was related to my great great grandfather John Mathias, who arrived in Canada from Wales in 1812. Mathias may be a relatively common name, but after reading McClintock's summation of Henry, I will search for him and hope to find a link. Thank you for including John Ross' evocative poem. It transported me from my cluttered desk to a frozen hill top far away in time and space. I was aware of the Intrepid's Coombs, the stoker, but not about the Erebus's one. Perhaps pulling from the Charles Harris thread we could obtain further info.Andrés Paredeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17283802897907742244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8455284570156061492.post-17032525325186344842015-08-19T01:37:42.685+02:002015-08-19T01:37:42.685+02:00Coombs/Coombes - a name quite familiar to me in my...Coombs/Coombes - a name quite familiar to me in my wanderings, with such men three entitled to the Arctic Medal 1818-1855:

1) Charles Coombs, Able Seaman, "Erebus" - claimed by brother George Coombs

2) Thomas Coombs/Coombes, Carpenter's Crew, "Investigator" - evidently no medal issued

3) John Coombs/Coombes, Stoker, "Intrepid" - discharged dead, May 12, 1853; evidently no medal issued;
Lieutenant de Vaisseau de Bray, French Navy ("Resolute," 1852-54), who was commanding the sled party in which the stoker died, referred to him as "Thomas Coombes," so no doubt confused the two men's first names.

There were two issues of the Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840, with the clasp "Syria" [for 1840], each of which was issued to officially named to "John Coombes" - with one going to our unfortunate Arctic traveler above. I once held a medal with this name in my collection, but could obviously never prove it belonged to the stoker, or the other recipient, a private of the Royal Marines in HMS "Thunderer".

John Coombs had a brush with a Franklin Expedition member when he served onboard the steam vessel "Styx" from May 1842-February 1844. Boy 3rd Class Thomas G. Evans had joined the ship in August 1841, aged just 13 years, and was destined to be the youngest person to sail with Franklin (see Lloyd-Jones, Polar Record, 41 (219), p. 316 (2005).

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
